Let’s Talk About Email: Helen and Jacqui, Two Girls and A Laptop
We noticed how much you’re enjoying our Let’s Talk About Email series, so we’ve got another interview for you today! Helen and Jacqui are Marketing and Sales specialists from Australia who help businesses succeed with smart strategies. It’s a pleasure to have them on the blog!
Let’s talk about email with Helen and Jacqui!
Helen
Best email you received today:
The one telling us that we’re going to be ‘on air’ for a small-business radio broadcast next week!
Most intriguing subject line you ever got:
“There’s a Helen sized hole in our heart!”
Your biggest email pet peeve:
When people who are looking to collaborate with you, send a random email with no explanation or links, or details of what their business is about. And they expect you to do the work to find out. Chances are, we won’t – so a good opportunity might be missed.
If you could email any famous person, it would be:
I’ve got a girl-crush on Zoe Foster Blake, founder of Go To Skincare in Australia. I’d love to have an email convo (and real life one) about her small business highlights!
An email you wish you had never sent:
Back in my earlier corporate days, where I was complaining about a client and hit ‘return all’ – whoops!
What you most love about email:
For small business, that we are in control of when we send it, and who it reaches – unlike a social media post which is at the mercy of the platforms algorithm etc.
An email you’d be happy to get:
You and Jacqui have won the Entrepreneur Small Business Women of the year award!
Funniest or most unusual email address you’ve ever seen:
I can’t remember any? Perhaps they go to my junk folder!
No.1 reason why you unsubscribe:
Life is too busy, you have to offer me ‘value’ for me to stay around!
Biggest no-no in an email campaign:
Typos, bad links, poor grammar – basically, not proof-reading or editing! (I’m a perfectionist).
Jacqui
Best email you received today:
It’s from Mecca skincare and the subject header is ‘I owe drunk elephant an apology’. I had no idea what it was about but it compelled me to click!
Most intriguing subject line you ever got:
Have you ever been called bossy, Jacqui? (it was like they knew me).
Your biggest email pet peeve:
Subject headers where they dangle something of value but don’t deliver AND when Helen’s emails to me end up in my spam… we are on the same account (sort it out, G Suite!).
If you could email any famous person, it would be:
Oh, this is HARD. Ummm… I think I would email Sarah Wilson and tell her not only that I admire her but I love what she has done to spread awareness about sugar, nutrition and caring for our planet.
An email you wish you had never sent:
Similar to Helen, I accidentally sent sensitive info to the wrong client (in my defense, both accounts had contacts with the same name!).
What you most love about email:
For biz, I love the autonomy and control it gives to business owners. Freedom to grow your list, to be seen in the inbox and to build a direct relationship with your tribe. On more of a personal level, I love how much time it saves in our lives and how connected we can be to others all around the globe.
An email you’d be happy to get:
A collaboration invitation from a kick-ass business, we admire so many!
Funniest or most unusual email address you’ve ever seen:
A friend of mine chooses her email addresses from the horse racing guide in the newspaper.
No.1 reason why you unsubscribe:
Other than unsolicited email, its when a sender rocks into my inbox after months or years of not showing up. Go away!
Biggest no-no in an email campaign:
Overselling and under serving. Seriously, people, it’s 2018. Gone are the days when you can just flog your wares ad nauseam without offering your subscriber anything of value.
More about Helen & Jacqui
Helen and Jacqui and are the ‘gals’ behind the laptop (they actually have 2 laptops, but it didn’t quite have the same ring to it). They’re proud moms and live with their families in Brisbane, Australia. Collectively, they have over 37 years of experience in Sales and Marketing.
The idea to start their business with the purpose of supporting women in small business came about while working with their social media clients. Helen and Jacqui realized that so many business owners didn’t have a solid marketing plan in place, let alone a business or financial plan.
